Market Closure for Bakri Eid
The Indian stock markets are scheduled for a shortened trading week, with both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE remaining closed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in observance of Bakri Eid. This closure applies to the equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments across both exchanges. This marks the second market holiday in May, following the previous closure on May 1 for Maharashtra Day.
Impact on Commodity Markets
For commodity traders, the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will observe a partial closure on May 28; it will remain shut during the morning session but will resume trading for the evening session. On the other hand, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) will remain completely closed for both the morning and evening sessions on Thursday.
Remaining Market Holidays in 2026
Following the Bakri Eid market holiday closure, seven trading holidays remain in 2026 out of the total 16 scheduled for the year. The next market holiday will fall on June 26 for Muharram, marking the start of the second half of the holiday calendar.
The remaining market closures include Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and Christmas on December 25.
Weekend Holidays and Special Sessions
A few major holidays in 2026, such as Independence Day (August 15) and Diwali Laxmi Pujan (November 8), fall on weekends and will not result in additional weekday closures. However, even though Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on a Sunday, the stock exchanges are still expected to host their customary, special one-hour Muhurat Trading session, with exact timings to be announced closer to the date.
