The Islamic month of Muharram, which commenced on June 27, is one of the most significant times for Muslims. The tenth day of the month, called Ashura, falls on the 10th day of the Islamic month. When Is Muharram: July 6 Or 7?
The moon of Muharram was already sighted on June 26, and accordingly, Ashura will be observed on Sunday, July 6. According to the Government of India’s calendar, July 6 is the date for Muharram Ashura.
If Ashura would have fallen on July 7, schools, colleges and offices would have likely remain closed on Monday. But since Ashura is on Sunday, which is already a holiday, there will be no additional day of school and college closures.
According to the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) academic calendar for 2025–26, July 6 is the date for Muharram.
It is important to note that July 7 is not a bank holiday, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar list. Banks will remain closed on July 6 as it is a Sunday.

Importance Of Muharram In Islam
The Islamic calendar begins with the month of Muharram. It is an important holy period. Its tenth day, the Ashura, is of special significance for Shia Muslims. It is a day for mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
It is a time of prayers, rituals, processions and reflection for Muslims. Warfare is prohibited during this period. This period serves as a reminder of the importance of justice, fairness, bravery and sacrifice.
