India’s total Covid-19 cases have climbed to 5,755, with four fresh deaths and 391 new active cases recorded till 8 am on June 8, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s daily bulletin.
So far, 5,484 patients have been discharged.
Among the states, Kerala reported the highest jump with 127 new cases since Saturday, taking its total to 1,806. Delhi added 73 cases, bringing the tally to 665. Gujarat reported 102 new cases, taking the total to 717, while Maharashtra recorded 29 new cases, with the total now at 577. West Bengal added 26 new cases, tally at 622. Uttar Pradesh reported three new cases, bringing its total to 208.
Only Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Mizoram, and Tripura did not report fresh cases over the past 24 hours.
The country’s Covid-19 death toll has reached 59 so far this year, with four new deaths reported on Sunday. These included a 45-year-old pregnant woman in Madhya Pradesh who suffered seizures during a cesarean section, who tested positive later. A 63-year-old man in Maharashtra with multiple comorbidities, a 59-year-old man in Kerala battling advanced lung cancer, and a 79-year-old bedridden man in Tamil Nadu with diabetes and Covid-19 pneumonia.
Since January, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of deaths at 18, followed by Kerala (12), Delhi and Karnataka (7 each), Tamil Nadu (5), Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat (2 each), and Rajasthan and West Bengal (1 each).
To strengthen preparedness, the central government has rolled out mock drills across hospitals nationwide, testing oxygen supplies, ventilators, and critical medicines to ensure quick and efficient response if COVID-19 cases surge.
A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Director General of Health Services Dr. Sunita Sharma. According to sources, state and district surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring Influenza Like Illness and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness.
