Football fans around the world are mourning the loss of Diogo Jota, the talented Portuguese forward who played for Liverpool and the Portugal national team. Jota lost his life in a car crash early Thursday morning in Spain. He was 28 years old.

The Portuguese forward was driving a Lamborghini when the car reportedly had a tyre blowout while overtaking on the A-52 near Cernadilla in Zamora province, close to the Portuguese border. His younger brother, Andre Silva, 26, who also played professional football for FC Penafiel in Portugal, was travelling with him. Tragically, both brothers lost their lives in the crash. Local news says the Lamborghini went off the road, flipped over, and caught fire early Thursday morning. Emergency crews reached the scene immediately.

Jota’s death comes only two weeks after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in a private ceremony attended by close friends and family. The couple shared a strong bond and had three young children together, who were often seen cheering him on during matches. His family is said to be devastated by the news, as they were looking forward to building their future as a family. Friends and teammates have shared their heartbreak and are offering support to his wife and children during this incredibly difficult time.

Liverpool Football Club released a statement expressing “deep sadness and shock.” and Portugal’s Football Federation stated, “Diogo Jota was not only a great player with nearly 50 appearances for the national team, but also an outstanding person, admired for his joyful spirit and for being an inspiration in his community.”
