A Record-Breaking Deployment at Khavda
Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has commissioned a 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat – the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China. The project was completed within just 10 months of on-site construction beginning, making it one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage deployments globally. The total 3.37 GWh capacity includes 1.37 GWh commissioned in March 2026, taking AGEL’s cumulative operational BESS capacity at Khavda to this milestone figure.
What This Storage System Can Actually Do
To put the scale of this project in everyday terms, AGEL’s 3.37 GWh BESS can store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day. It can support peak electricity demand of cities like Indore or Chandigarh, or even the entire state of Goa. The system can also power more than 12 million LED bulbs continuously for ten hours. The BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology integrated with advanced energy management systems to optimise efficiency, reliability, and grid responsiveness.
Why Battery Storage Matters for Renewable Energy
One of the biggest challenges with solar and wind energy is that output varies depending on weather, climate, and time of day. Battery storage addresses this directly – by storing surplus energy and releasing it during periods of peak demand, BESS allows renewable power to become dependable rather than intermittent. AGEL’s deployment at Khavda, where it is already building the world’s largest renewable energy plant of 30 GW by 2029 (with 9.9 GW already operational), strengthens that site’s ability to deliver green power around the clock.
Ambitious Plans Ahead
AGEL is not stopping here. The company targets adding over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 alone, with plans to scale this to 50 GWh over the next five years. Speaking on the achievement, Executive Director Sagar Adani said that large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in India’s clean energy transition and that AGEL’s investments reflect a long-term commitment to building future-ready clean energy infrastructure at global scale.
