The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evem Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme for farmers for the installation of solar pumps and grid-connected solar and other renewable power plants in the country.

The objective of the PM KUSUM scheme is to add Solar capacity of 34,800 MW by March 2026 with the total Central Financial support of Rs.  34,422 crore, including service charges to the implementing agencies.

The Scheme has the following three components:

  • Component-A: Setting up of 10,000 MW of Decentralized Ground/ Stilt Mounted Grid-Connected Solar or other Renewable Energy-based Power Plants.
  • Component-B: Installation of 14 Lakh Stand-alone Solar Agriculture Pumps.
  • Component-C: Solarisation of 35 Lakh Grid Connected Agriculture Pumps, including Feeder Level Solarization.

Component B of the scheme specifically supports individual farmers in installing standalone solar pumps or replacing diesel pumps in off-grid areas. This helps reduce diesel costs, provides better irrigation, and can increase income from selling excess power.

The PM-KUSUM scheme subsidizes solar-powered pump installations for farmers with a Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of 30% (50% for specific regions), a State Government subsidy of 30%, and the remaining 10–40% to be paid by the farmer, who can also secure a bank loan.

Here are the top three companies by total solar-powered pump installations under the scheme
